Packed Folder!

Your child's folder was PACKED on Friday!

They had the following:

1. Picture Day Info/Envelope: Please have this envelope filled out and money enclosed. Every child will get their picture taken - regardless if you sent in money. Please dress accordingly! :)
2. Magazine Sale Fundraiser: Your child can win prizes by filling out names and addresses for the fundraiser! Our school makes money from this! By filling out a whole book with 7 addresses, your child can win prizes. Please remember to have an adult write down addresses of people you know, and only one person per address. It doesn't count for prizes if you have any duplicate addresses and if the book isn't filled out completely! Please remember that this brings our school money! This money is spent on things for your child!
3. Hh Homework: You can work on this all weekend and all week! It is always due on Fridays. How is Homework going? Is it just right? Too easy? Too hard? Do what works best for your child! If your child can handle doing all of it in one sitting - do it! Or if their attention span or frustration level will only allow a 5 minutes each night - do that!
4. Sight Words & Hh Flashcards: Please practice these every week! Practicing frequently will make a better reader! We had a meeting on Thursday with the Curriculum Director Kathy Robbins. Each grade level is now responsible for 100 sight / high frequency words. As teachers, we will have to assess the sight words to see if your child knows them or not. These words are in EVERYTHING that your child reads. Some words cannot be phonetically sounded out so them simply have to be memorized. Ms. Jamison and I have decided to work on 4-5 words each week for each nine week grading period. The last week of each grading period will be review and assessing those words. Keep the flashcards for each letter and words in a safe place for daily review! Flip through them each night for a couple of minutes!
5. My Journal: If your child finished their journal through work on writing, I put a purple star on it and sent it home. Work on writing is our 2nd Daily Five Activity. We have been working on Read to Self and Work on Writing every day and trying to build our stamina. The students have been really successful. If they were to get off task - it is usually due to not choosing a smart spot to work. Look for a finished journal to be sent home this week. When they finish it - they have another one to start on. CHILDREN WILL BE A BETTER READER BY WRITING AND READING EVERY DAY! If you can carry this over on the weekend - please do! You can practice writing the sight words for the week, their name, letters, and numbers. (Please remember that all letters need to be the right sizes in between the lines! Talk to your child about "Did it touch the top line and bottom line for capitals? Did the lowercase letters start at the middle line and go down to the bottom line?" This type of communication is important!

Other News this Week:

• We are working on the letter Hh. I love that this worked out for this week - our Star helper is Hailey! That couldn't have worked out any better since Hailey starts with H! :)
• We are working on sorting with math. Grab a handful of toys or ANYTHING! Sort the items by color, shape, or size. Put all of the purple things together. Put all of the round things together. Put all of the things with wheels together. Put all of the big babies together and then the small babies together. Talk about sorting when you go to the grocery store! Ask, how did they arrange those boxes? What area did they sort the carts? Use the word sort when doing the laundry with them!
